Pranayama

Pranayama is the yogic practice of focusing on the breath, and through it on the prana — the life force the breath carries.

Pranayama
The practice

What pranayama is

Prana means vital life force and yama means to gain control. In yoga the breath is associated with prana, so pranayama is the means by which the prana shakti — the life energies — are elevated.

It is the practice that changes most quickly and that people notice soonest: a few minutes of the right breathing does more for a restless mind than an hour of trying to sit still.

What a pranayama class includes

  • Observing your own breath before changing anything about it
  • Foundational techniques taught in order, not picked at random
  • Ratio work — how long to inhale, hold and exhale, and why it differs by constitution
  • The cautions for each technique, including who should not do it
  • How pranayama sits with your asana practice and with meditation
Why practise

What pranayama is good for

  • A steadier nervous system, usually within the first few sessions
  • Better sleep and less reactivity through the day
  • Breath you can call on deliberately — in labour, in stress, in pain
  • The foundation that meditation and bandha practice both rest on

Questions

Pranayama FAQs

Is pranayama safe for everyone?

Most techniques are, but some are not suited to pregnancy, high blood pressure or certain heart and eye conditions. Tell us your history when you book so the right techniques are chosen, and check with your doctor if you are unsure.

How long before pranayama makes a difference?

The calming techniques act quickly — often within a session. The deeper effects on sleep and energy tend to show over a few weeks of daily practice.

How much daily time does pranayama need?

Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to hold the practice. What matters far more than length is doing it at roughly the same time each day.
