Panchakarma and Yogic Cleansing

Panchakarma names five Ayurvedic cleansing techniques and yoga names six of its own — each done under supervision.

The practice

What panchakarma and yogic cleansing are

In Ayurveda there are five main cleansing techniques, together called panchakarma — pancha meaning five and karma meaning techniques. The five detox processes are Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana.

Yoga names six of its own, the Shatkarmas: Dhauti, Vasti, Neti, Nauli, Trataka and Kapalbhati. By following the Ayurvedic and yogic techniques together one can achieve not only a healthy and fit body but also a replenished mind and soul.

What a panchakarma consultation includes

  • An assessment first — constitution, current state and whether cleansing suits you at all
  • Preparation, which in panchakarma matters as much as the procedure
  • The appropriate technique, carried out under qualified supervision
  • Aftercare: food, rest and routine for the days that follow
  • The gentler Shatkarmas, such as Neti, Trataka and Kapalbhati, taught for home practice
Why practise

What panchakarma and yogic cleansing are good for

  • Cleansing chosen for your constitution rather than picked from a list
  • Procedures run by a practitioner with a PG Diploma in Panchakarma
  • A healthy and fit body, and a replenished mind alongside it
  • A clear route back into ordinary practice afterwards

Questions

Panchakarma and Yogic Cleansing FAQs

Can I do panchakarma on my own?

No. Panchakarma procedures are assessed, prepared for and supervised by a qualified practitioner. Self-prescribed cleansing is where people come to harm. Some Shatkarmas, such as Neti and Trataka, can be taught for home practice once you have been shown them properly.

Who supervises panchakarma here?

Dr. Saraswathi Bukka, who holds a PG Diploma in Panchakarma treatments from Vaidyaratnam Oushadashala Ayurveda Foundation in Kerala and has been a registered practitioner for over 15 years.

Is this suitable during pregnancy or illness?

Often not. Cleansing is assessed case by case and is frequently postponed. Tell us your full history, including any condition or medication, and speak to your doctor before beginning.
